And what will be revealed when we see behind the mask? It's got no soul but it does have a bisexual character and then ruins that minor saving grace with a gay joke.
The one saving grace of this episode was that brief mention of the love of my life: River Song; the real superhero, who could have saved us all from this snoozefest, if only Moffat had brought back Alex Kingston again.
Evidently, he thought that an amalgamation of cardboard-cutout characters, superhero tropes that people are getting tired of, and shit he's already done that we didn't even like the first time or the fifty times after that , would be more satisfying to watch play out than anything with an actual emotional anchor.
It's been a year without The Doctor many wept and gnashed their teeth, me? I endured the '90s as a fan. Now that was hard! Well, like the previous Christmas special, it was better than the last full series which was boredom itself proving once again that Moffat is better when containing himself to the world of one story, rather than bogging himself and us down in frustrating continuity.
It walks the line between fun and silly very well, sure it's cheesy but is doctor who so is the enjoyable kind of cheesiness, the characters are likable and the story simple but very good, even if doesn't really have anything to do with christmas.
In general is a very good way to get us exited for the next series and have a good deal of fun while we are at it. Finally, some new Doctor Who after a year long wait!
Shame it's a bit disappointing. I fell asleep twice over the last two days trying to watch it, so that can't be a good sign.
I love the homage to the Superman films, but otherwise there's not a lot going on here. Dodgy American accents, rubbish dialogue, forgettable villains.
Matt Lucas is wasted. And that trailer for the new season doesn't exactly fill me with confidence either. I'm more than willing to give the new companion a chance and hopefully she will give the show a shot in the arm it desperately needs.
Doctor Who: The Return of Doctor Mysterio is a homage to American comic books and the combination of two of my favourite things, namely superheroes and Doctor Who was an exciting one.
The Christmas special itself acts as a brief follow up to the previous year's Weddings of River Song although it can be watched without knowledge of that one as only a throwaway reference to River Song is mentioned when it really needed more presence especially given how important she was in her life.
And all things being equal, he does a pretty good job with it. The biggest problem is simply lack of space. This is firmly an episode about Grant and Lucy.
But perhaps more to the point, it just feels off to have the Doctor in grumpy mourning mode at all after a year off the air.
Surely nobody actually felt as though The Husbands of River Song was a source of unfinished business in dire need of resolution a year later.
Which I suppose brings us to Nardole. Who basically works. I doubt that, and suspect that once Bill shows up things will get going a bit.
For now, we had an entertaining hour of television that will still watch well any time of the year. I still believe there might be more to the Harmony Shoals storyline this series when it was brought up in Husbands, they do seem to be the same head-splitting beings who tried to purchase the diamond from River, there's the Ghost of Love and Wishes gemstone in this episode, and of course there's that UNIT soldier who might spread more Harmony Shoals around.
I don't think it's completely over, especially if Moffat was looking for a direction to take his final series in and an arc word might be a callback to Bad Wolf and such.
Just a guess or speculation. A shadow falls across their table. It is a bald man with a diagonal scar running around his face from the back of his skull, round across the right temple to below his left cheek bone.
His voice is very hoarse. Are you empowered to purchase? Don't want to know. I'll need immediate payment.
Can you do that? Just stuck out to me when I was watching Husbands again after I spotted Harmony Shoals was the name of the company in previews.
Oh, yeah, they're clearly the same villains as Husbands. But I just took that as another part of the "jeez, really, a direct follow-up?
Though if so I mean, two hours and two episodes in and they've yet to reveal a propensity for being interesting villains.
They're Slitheen that don't fart. Oddly, no one has picked up on the most provocative thing about Harmony Shoals, the name.
Harmonies play under melodies. Shoals are sandbars that lie immediately under the surface of bodies of water.
Well spotted! I must admit it passed me by. It's clearly stated on the BBC website that they're same. In fact, they mention it twice.
Not the first time, either. We had the Great Intelligence show up in The Snowman, and then popped up in the remainder of Series 7.
That Lucy was unaware of Grant's lifelong crush, while she entrusted him with her child and while he could see her naked without her consent or knowledge the whole time they've known each other?
I dunno, seems creepy to me. I think I'd be on board with your reading if Lucy were at least aware Grant was crushing on her and still let him be her nanny with that knowledge, but I don't think the "can see her naked" part is really relevant.
I could see anyone who invited me into their house naked without their knowledge or consent if I wanted, I think it's pretty easy to hide cameras nowadays.
Admittedly with a risk of getting caught, but it's not that risk which means I don't do it, it's because I just don't do that sort of thing. And neither does he.
Provided he can reliably control that now. Perhaps the uncomfortableness here is rooted in the way that, while there's nothing stalkerish about Grant, providing we assume he became the babysitter by Lucy going "I want someone I know and trust.
Are you available? Want me to babysit sometimes? Particularly since he included the X-ray vision thing in the first place, which I don't remember being necessary for the plot, makes less sense than the other powers when you think about it since it means he gets any light around him to do weird things rather than just affecting what his body can do, and feeds into the "men can't help themselves" thing.
Wouldn't the story be better if that was just left out entirely? I know Superman has it, but like I don't think "homages" to other stories are a good reason for bad storytelling decisions.
I think the story would make me less uncomfortable if it weren't included. I don't disagree, but I will say that I appreciated that the x-ray vision gag was the exact opposite of the expected one.
Far too often, "realistic" crypto-Kryptonians get their x-ray vision as a teenager and immediately think "Hey I can be a peeping tom and no-one will know".
Even if they don't actually do it, it's presented as the first thing they think of. Grant reacted the way I would have - namely "Oh, god, this is the most embarrassing thing ever, how do I make it stop?
I tried as hard as I could, but I just couldn't escape the creepy dimensions of the Grant-Lucy relationship.
Wait a second. Grant hides the phone in the oven. LUCY: Grant, could you babysit for me tomorrow night? BOTH: I've got a date. A date? LUCY: Er, kind of a date.
LUCY: An interview. Are you seeing someone? I mean. But are you? I mean, you never even go out, and suddenly you've got a date?
LUCY: I'm sorry? LUCY: You will? Let me take care of it. LUCY: Okay. Lucy leaves. Twenty four years. Yeah, of course it would be that, wouldn't it.
Even for me. So, please, as much as it is possible for a human male, try not to be an idiot. The Doctor looks at Mister Huffle and walks away.
Sirens wail, Grant sighs and removes his spectacles. Sim is working at a keyboard when Brock walks up. SIM: Ah, welcome, brother.
How is your vehicle? Cracking sounds as Brock adjusts his skull. SIM: It will relax with wear. Observe this. The finest vehicle this planet has to offer.
And can it be acquired? SIM: A plan is being formulated. The Doctor, of course. SIM: I'm not sure. But he may be dangerous. I'm talking to you live!
You can jump back in your skins now. Except, of course, they're not your skins, are they? I'll give you a head start. I'll close my eyes and I'll count to ten.
I will make no attempt to follow you. But, starting now, all of you, everywhere, pack your bags and get off of this planet. Brock opens its head along the diagonal scar, reaches in and takes out a weapon.
DOCTOR: Multi-nucleate organism, functioning as an infinitely adaptable, independently functioning, peripatetic central nervous system. Good to keep an open mind.
Of course it won't work. Stating the obvious, you've set up in every capital city in the world, so clearly the plan is to unzip the head of every world leader, pop yourselves inside.
Of course, you can't just roll up with a team of surgeons to the White House or to the Kremlin, because they've got big fences, shouty people and cross dogs.
SIM: They will come to us, and they will come running. I very much doubt it. Take this! The Doctor takes a round object wrapped in paper from his pocket.
Sim takes it. I've lost count. Not one of them has succeeded. Not a single one. They all lost and burned and ran.
That's who I am. The Doctor puts his fingers in his mouth and whistles. SIM: What is this? I always bring a snack.
But I don't want it now. He's put me off my dinner. The Tardis materialises around the Doctor. Right on target.
A few accidental stop-offs along the way. Nardole is wearing ornate bejewelled robes and headdress, and concentrating on flying the Tardis smoothly.
I ruled firmly, but wisely. The Doctor moves a lever, Nardole moves it back. How did it go? Issued a warning, donated a burger, nicked some stationery.
The Ghost. What have you got? It's why I reassembled you. And we both know why, don't we. But, oh, look at you, avoiding the subject.
LUCY: Good girl. Lucy tucks Jennifer into her cot. You look nice. LUCY: You look surprised. Strictly business. So I won't be late.
Lucy leaves, Grant rips his shirt open and flies up to the roof carrying a picnic hamper. LUCY: Hi. She has changed into the little red dress.
LUCY: Is something wrong? He made a promise. You should have a little bit more respect. The Tardis lands.
Happy people are running towards the exit of an identical building to the one in New York. The Doctor sits at a computer.
Sorry, I'm doing everything I can to stop me. See that? There was one from the New York office too. There's something in low orbit. A table has been laid, with a candle as centrepiece.
LUCY: I did book a restaurant. LUCY: I suppose you get a lot of stares, dressed like that. Are you sure you're warm enough? Okay, no.
He lights the candle with a snap of his fingers. LUCY: Yeah, definitely. The shielding's too good. LUCY: So what powers do you have? LUCY: Is that ever tempting?
LUCY: In what sense? LUCY: How much longer? On a green screen zooming in on The Ghost - Subject Located. It won't be long now.
SIM: The Ghost is located. The three doors in the Brain Safe open. Looking out of the Tardis door at a spaceship. Nardole is back in his normal clothes.
Shall we pop over and have a look? Pretty sure no-one's on board. Did you scan for lifeforms? All the lights are off. Lucy is recording the interview and taking written notes.
LUCY: Do you have a girlfriend? Well, there has been speculation. You do fly around New York dressed in rubber with a big G on your chest.
LUCY: I get it. There's some stuff you'd like to keep private. LUCY: How do you cope with your double life? Everyone has a day job.
LUCY: Come on. You spend half your time as a regular person. LUCY: And the other half saving the world.
How do you cope? LUCY: I have a nanny, that's basically your answer. LUCY: He's downstairs right now. LUCY: I'm sorry, it's just that guys like you sometimes find it funny, a man being a nanny.
LUCY: Excuse me a minute. Lucy walks to the parapet around the edge of the roof. An ambulance pulls up outside the building, and Brock lets the three surgeons out of the back.
The Tardis materialises. The spaceship is dripping with moisture. They walk past an electric toothbrush on a shelf, which beeps and flashes red.
The alarm from the spaceship sounds here. Sim ejects a man from his computer and starts typing. SIM: Move. Up on the spaceship, two humanoids with half a head and a red light sticking out of them, follow the Doctor and Nardole.
You know, not everyone can be a superhero. LUCY: Not everyone can be a nanny! He's downstairs right now and he was supposed to be on a date and he cancelled it and you know what's really bugging me about that?
Who is he dating? Why is that bugging me? Why do I care? The Ghost removes his mask behind her back. He puts his hand on her shoulder but she walks away and sits down again.
LUCY: What's wrong with me? LUCY: Grant. The perfect name. A man I take for granted. I even lied to him about this dress but I don't think he's ever told a single lie to me, not once, about anything.
Not once. When Lucy finally looks up, the Ghost has his mask back on. The roof door opens. Please, take no aggressive action, or your friend's life is over.
What do you want here? His body. A surgeon places a jar containing a brain on the table. The Doctor runs his sonic screwdriver over the bridge control panels.
The reactor core. It's cycling at critical. Someone's been rewiring. This isn't a ship any more. It's a giant bomb.
Just going to move out. The Doctor sonicks the bridge door shut. But you could wipe out a city. Good point, well made. It's not a capital city.
You're quite right. What would happen? Not all of it, Nardole. Remember what he said, the scary little German fella?
SIM [on monitor]: This building can withstand a blast up to four times the strength of a nuclear explosion. SIM [on monitor]: Did you understand?
When everyone thinks that the Earth is being attacked from space, what then? Thumping on door. It'll hold for at least ten minutes. The people will panic, yes.
But what about the world leaders? The presidents and kings, the prime ministers and generals? What will they do?
What do the rich old men always do when the fighting starts? They'll find the safest place to hide themselves away and send all their young people to die.
And where's the safest place in every capital city now? What's the only part of New York still standing?
It's a shop window. When the world is in danger, come hide with us. Harmony Shoal will open its doors to the terrified leaders of the world.
SIM [on monitor]: And they will come running. An alien sitting inside their skull. In one day of terror, the executive authority of Planet Earth will pass to Harmony Shoal.
It's a good plan. I like it. How come our side never gets plans like that? SIM [on monitor]: The humans have no plan at all.
They have the same plan they always have. SIM [on monitor]: What plan? The Ghost is being restrained by two surgeons. Brock takes the lid off the brain jar.
You realise I'm talking to my colleague in the jar? Whatever our faults, we have the virtue of patience. LUCY: Ghost, don't worry about me.
Do what you've got to do. LUCY: Don't listen to him! I like to see their faces. The Ghost thumps the surgeons and flies into the sky. Brock opens his head and takes out his gun.
LUCY: No, you can't. That's the trouble with one hostage. You kill me, the only reason he'll come back is for revenge. You really want to deal with that?
Grant falls through the roof door. Grant holds out the baby monitor. SIM [on monitor]: Stand away from the controls, Doctor.
Any attempt to interfere with them will precipitate the attack immediately. Very clever. One question, as long as I'm here.
Why haven't you done it already? SIM [on monitor]: When the time is right, there will be no delay. You told me something useful. You shouldn't have done that.
SIM [on monitor]: What did I tell you? I don't like the smile! I can't destroy it, I can't remove it, I can't stop it falling. There's only one thing I can do.
The thing about being in a room full of buttons and switches is, I love buttons and switches! SIM [on monitor]: What are you doing? Pressing buttons and throwing switches.
The spaceship tilts forward. Say wheeee! SIM: Lower shields! Brace for impact! New York is under attack.
Besides, this is the one the Ghost will come for, I think. Can you hear me? Do you have super-hearing? I'm going to kill her. I'm going to kill her right now!
Alarms wailing, fire coming off the heat shield.
