Xena-S06E12-Caligula-2/5-Deutsch-Synopsis Caligula Italian: Caligola is a Italian-American erotic historical drama film focusing on the rise and fall of the Roman Emperor Caligula.
It is the only feature film produced by the men's magazine Penthouse. Producer Bob Guccione, the magazine's founder, intended to produce an explicit pornographic film with a feature film narrative and high production values.
He also cast Penthouse Pets as extras in unsimulated sex scenes filmed during post-production by himself and Giancarlo Lui.
Guccione hired screenwriter Gore Vidal to draft the film's script and Tinto Brass to direct the film. Brass extensively altered Vidal's original screenplay, leading Vidal to disavow the film.
The final screenplay focuses on the idea that "absolute power corrupts absolutely". Brass and Guccione disagreed over Guccione's use of unsimulated sexual content, which Brass refused to film.
Because the producers did not allow Brass to edit the film, they changed its tone and style significantly and added hardcore sex scenes not filmed by Brass, thus turning Caligula into a pornographic drama that disregarded the director's intentions to present the film as a political satire.

I'm a huge fan of Helen Mirren, granted this is not her her best film but it's a great way can see where she started along with Malcolm McDowell.
See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. The DVD itself is fine, but that's no reason to rate this atrocity of a film highly.
I was goaded into buying it by the exciting sounding cast and the low purchase price. And even then the only thing I can say is "don't bother". The sets are grandiose, quite mind blowing actually, but the story is interjected with orgies and hardcore sex scenes none of them involving any of the famous names.
If you must, go ahead, buy it and watch it. In the right company strictly adult and after enough drinks, it may even be fun. The only thing worth seeing is the macabre beheading machine.
Now that was weirdly wonderful in a very dark way. I am interested in film as a medium, and specifically the 70's due to the risks that film makers were taking, at the end of the holywood studio system directers and financiers were gaining more and more influence.
This led to films like Caligula being made where an artist has an idea and a financier funds that by getting a porn merchant to pay for the film even if clips of his 'art' need to be included.
Caligula is a mess of a film with some interesting moments and good performences interspersed between random orgies and tortures.
The film was cut to ribbons in editing and to my mind it shows as there was little flow to proceedings and the overarching story was difficult to follow unless you had read up on the production beforehand.
However as a snapshot of the era it was made in i have a soft spot for this film that means i cannot say it is rubbish, the level of talent attracted to it shows that at some point it must have lokoed like it was going to be a real winner, and the fevered atmosphere i found to be actually unsettling and provike quite a strong emotional response in me, which is more than a lot of films have done.
I would recommend this, but not as a relaxed fun film to watch, more as an art piece to react to. However, I was not aware that this version of "Caligula" was a combination of soft and hard core pornography, until I played it that is.
Basically it is ham from beginning to end and the presence of some reputable actors and actresses did not really make up for the script.
I suppose, and I am being generous" that the film delivers everything one would expect of a character like Caligula, ably played by Malcolm McDowell, including his perversions, and deliver it does.
If you are of a quiet or repressed demeanour then I would not recommend this film. Report abuse.
This epic was directed by Tinto Brass, an Italian film maker well-known for his cheap titillation films, on the borders of soft porn.
It was funded by Bob Guccione, head of the Penthouse magazine and blue film empire, and had to be cut to ninety minutes for cinema showing, because of its nudity, and pornographic content.
It is now available uncut, in a full version, running just under three hours. What's to like then? Well, pretty much everything, and for one good reason, the cast.
Peter O'Toole, John Geilgud, Helen Mirren, a clutch of Italy's finest, and Malcolm McDowell, playing the lead role of Caligula, in a manner so crazy, it was a wonder he wasn't banged up in a nuthouse as soon as filming ceased.
Even a hammy script, dubbed Italian hunks, and completely shameless sex and full-frontal nudity, cannot detract from the quality of the performances.
There are mad set pieces too. A huge machine that cuts off the heads of prisoners buried up to their necks in the sand.
A scene in an Imperial brothel, where the wives of senators are forced to take on all comers, to raise money, is filmed on a vast set, with a huge cast of fornicating extras, indulging in all kinds of unspeakable perversity.
There is rape, murder, buggery, torture, execution, incest, and even abortion by disemboweling. No degradation is too low to sink to.
But this was Rome, at the time of its most depraved emperor; that was pretty much what it was like. I feel I should apologise in advance, but I just can't resist it.
Make sure you get the uncut version though, and don't watch it with your Mum. I have also seen it when it was released in Video format, and this version too was slightly different.
This Uncut version is exactly what it says it is!
