Experimenter Official Trailer 1 (2015) - Peter Sarsgaard, Winona Ryder Movie HDDon't expect explosions and car chases though A peerless Peter Sarsgaard gives an inventive performance asserting most of his lines like in some kind of TV commercial.
At first, Experimenter fills its disconcerting vibe with some riveting narration which quite works. Almereyda surely knows how to build up things in perspective leading up to its momentum.
But then the film loses its foundation in its second half, making its final act a bland turnout. The acting was great.
Sarsgaard is charismatic as Stanley Milgram. Wishing more from her next time. First half hour is pretty great, especially if you go in cold. Can't fully sustain itself once it leaves the lab, but Jim Gaffigan's work here makes me anticipate his upcoming turn as Rob Ford all the more.
It seems more fitting as an anecdote in a psychology textbook,…. You know what bad lighting does? It eliminates textures.
Makes furniture look like props, rooms look like sets. Pulls back the curtain , basically. Shot like a play for some reason, with tons of obvious green screens and way too much talking to the audience.
The First Act is interesting because we get to watch the experiment itself, but the biographical bits about Milgram and historical documentary-style scenes were the last straw for me.
Review by 20kcm. Very interesting movie. It makes sense of course, but it was cool to learn more about him and what he was about and went through. Why people are the way they are and why they what they do.
I guess the big question is would you go all the way on the shocks? Peter and Winona are wonderful but the second act has just one too many dull moments.

It's this mischievousness that makes the film, one of the more unique, oddly entertaining things you'll find at the cinema this fall.
