Winthrop's ghost intervenes, and hauls the men down to the basement where they are locked in terror until the police arrive. Caleb Braithwhite blackmails George and Montrose to break into the natural history museum and retrieve a secret book, hidden behind magical incantations set to protect it.

Abdullah nearly dies in the attempt, but the men are able to retrieve the book. Caleb honors his deal with the men. It's the "Book of Names", once owned by Hiram Winthrop.

He delivers to them the book he stole from them along with a sizable amount of money. Hippolyta finds a secret compartment in one of the rooms in the Winthrop House containing a book and a key.

The book gives an address for an observatory in Warlock Hill, Wisconsin. Hippolyta, having a life long passion for astronomy, decides to take a trip out there to see it.

She finds the observatory and is able to get in with the key. Once inside, she discovers it contains no telescope, just a control console containing 64 windows each displaying a 3-digit number, and a button.

She soon discovers that by changing the numbers in the windows and pushing the button, a scene is projected inside the observatory from random places in the universe.

There is a doorframe on the other side of the observatory which she suspects would let her walk out into that random place.

The book she found included 64 3-digit numbers, so she dials those in and pushes the button. It displays a white sandy beach. Hippolyta goes through the door frame onto the beach and discovers a house a distance off.

Investigating, she is captured by a woman named Ida. Ida explains that she and several others had been taken there nearly 20 years ago by Hiram Winthrop, furious with them that his son had run off with one of the maids, and he was going to keep all of them there until they told him where his son was.

To show them he was serious, he left them there and said he would come back in a few days. He never returned. The implication is he died suddenly before he could return, perhaps at the hands of Samuel Braithwhite, with whom he had a contentious relationship.

Ida destroys the book with the 64 digit location written in it, and she eventually lets Hippolyta leave, but makes her promise to destroy the key, claiming she wants to stay and be left alone.

Hippolyta does leave, but she does not destroy the key. Ruby Letitia's sister is approached by Caleb Braithwaite with a proposal. He needs someone to do odd jobs for him and also keep an eye on The Winthrop House.

In return, he will give her a potion that will turn her into a beautiful red-haired white woman for a period of time. Ruby tries this and discovers it is real.

She explores parts of Chicago as a white woman with freedom she never would have had as a black woman. She agrees to work for Caleb in this fashion.

One of the jobs he has her do is attend a meeting of representatives of different sorcerer lodges from around the country, in disguise as the red-head whom Ruby has named Hillary.

There Caleb proposes to each lodge that they join forces, form a sort of union between them, to share knowledge and help each other. When asked who would lead this union, he suggests that they all meet back in Chicago in a few months on Midsummer's Day for a contest.
