We actually live 40 minutes from Nuremberg but only visit the city occasionally, especially at Christmas for the market. And because we had been to Nuremberg several times, we wanted to come and spend the weekend to get to know the city in a different way.
Our hotel was situated in a place that forced us to see parts of the city that we had not seen before. It was really beautiful and I bet it's quite lovely in the summer.
We went through the Toy Museum, toured the castle and National Museum. We also attended church at St. Sebaldus - we were very glad that the seats were heated!
And because we live here, eating German food was not our goal. Boogies was about the best Barbecue that I ever had. O'Shea's made me feel like I was sitting in Dublin - good food and of course a pint of Guinness.
I hear that the place is really hopping in the summer months. There are lots of things to see and do in this wonderful city.
And don't forget the great shopping areas! There are huge pedestrian streets full of great stores where you can buy your treasures.
Easiest way to arrive is by train. You can walk just about everywhere in the old town and you don't have to worry about parking. I have also taken guided tours that were very good.
I highly recommend the tours if you have never been here before. Hotel close to the Old Town walls, so we left every morning on foot after breakfast and explored the City returning later in the evening.
We stayed four nights and that seemed just about the right time, considering the Christmas Market was also on. The Market Square was nice, but disappointed the Beautiful Fountain was all covered up.
The Christmas Market was very good. Lorenz Old Town with it's churches, white towers and Marriage Fountain.
Along the Pegnitz River, with several bridges and Flee Market area. Also a 15 minute walk from the old Town gets you to Courtroom where The Nuremberg War Trails were held, another must do, visited on a Sunday as it is a working courthouse and if a case is being heard you are not allowed to enter.
There is so much to do in Nuremberg and all within walking distance, also a very good shopping area, plenty of department shops.
Plenty of cafes and bars, and lovely restaurants. A visit to the Castle is a must. Entry into the castle is worth the time and money. Audio guides in English and other languages are available.
Entry into the castle includes entry into the tower, The views over Nüremberg are wonderful. The Hauptmarkt was bustling with the Fabulous Christmas Markets.
There is much to explore within the old city walls. Fabulous Restaurants to choose from. A visit to the Dokumentationszentrum Documentation Centre and nearby Zeppelinfeld was fantastic and not to be missed!
The Documentation Centre entry includes an audio guide in English and other languages. I can not speak highly enough of the presentation of this exhibition of the rise and fall of the Nazi Party, through to the Nürnberg trials.
Allow 2 to 3 hours at least. I would love to return and spend more time listening to the additional information offered by the audio guide.
The Zeppelinfeld is situated across from the lake. About 15 to 20 minutes walk around the lake if you go via the Grosse Strasse Great Road built from Granite obtained from the Labour camps.
There are so many things to like about Nuremberg. Rail transfer from airport to city is so easy and so quick!
The city is beautiful at all times of year but especially so at Christmas. The Christmas market is magical. There are so many great eating places, and so atmospheric.
For the very best in atmosphere, really good German food and the warmest of welcomes, try the Albrecht Durer Stube in the Agnesgasse; it is unbelievably good value and superb quality, but ,be warned, you would be advised to book in advance!
It's always busy. It's worth taking a trip to Bamberg, about 55 minutes by train. I could go on and on!!!! The 1st impression of Nuernberg was that it might be some sci-fi city, because of the metro from the airport to the city-center, which was automatic without a driver.
However, as I saw it passing through the medieval city-walls, I got a hint of this city's rich history, and how this is integrated into the inhabitants' daily life.
The old town is wonderful but small - can be easily covered on foot , with lots of cathedrals, each one unique in its own way.
It also houses the Imperial Castle up on a steep hill, as well as the Toy Museum, and many other interesting sights. Nuernberg is also charged with history, from medieval to contemporary, and has been one of the action-spots during and after 2nd World War.
The contemporary view is, hopefully, represented by the Human Rights alley, with poles reading each article in both German and another world language.
Highlight of my trip was the exhibition of musical instruments in the Germanic National Museum, displaying old medieval instruments, some of them new to me until the visit.
Nurnberg is Germany's perfect city. It's like one of those Christmas towns you buy in a department store, it is so quaint and pretty.
It is also very walkable. It's wonderful to walk around in the day or at night It is especially amazing during Christmas time.
A high point of my trip, though, was a visit to the Document Center and Nazi rally grounds. It was a bit sobering, but extremely interesting, historic, and very moving.
It is about 15 minutes outside Nuremberg. I enjoyed every minute of my time in Nurnberg, walking the streets, watching the sun set over the city from the castle, roaming the Christmas market, and eating good food.
The apartment was clean and modern, well-equipped and comfortable. The mattress on the bed was just right! The hosts had left small things like sugar, bottles of water and coffee as well as some biscuits, all much appreciated as we arrived in the centre of Nuremberg after the shops closed at 8pm.
For anyone else arriving after 8, there are shops in the Hauptbahnhof 2 U-Bahn stops or 15 minutes walk away that stay open much later.
The Altstadt walls are m away from the apartments, and it only took 15 minutes gentle walk to get to the Hauptmarkt. We ate at the nearby restaurant, Mullers, and were very happy with the Bavarian menu on offer.
Their food was as good as other 'name' restaurants that we went to! We also gained good value from the 2 day Nuremberg Card, at Eu28 each from the Tourist Office in the Hauptmarkt, but if your visit includes a Monday, plan carefully to get the value as most of the major museums shut.
The tram nearby goes straight to the Nazi Party Rallying grounds and the excellent Doku-Centre which is open on Mondays.

Place was neat and clean. We requested late check-in and even though they don't have 24 hour front desk, the keys were waiting for us when we arrived with prior confirmation.
Very reasonable price for a comfortable room near Nuremberg. I had a rental car, so getting around was easy. Hotel staff was very friendly.
A small bar is in the lobby with reasonably priced drinks. Clean, very efficiently furnished, the decor is pleasant to the eyes, comfortable, easy to reach, close the main train station, fast and direct connection to the airport.
